Warhill silences Lady Trojan bats in 5-1 win
New Kent Lady Trojan softball coach Nicole O’Bier said it best: “You can’t do much when you can’t hit.”
And that statement defined her team’s performance Tuesday when they entertained Warhill’s Lions. The visitors smacked 14 hits to only three for the Lady Trojans. In the end, the Lions walked away with a 5-1 victory.
New Kent’s three hits, meanwhile, did nothing to boost results on the scoreboard. Emily Angle ended up stranded at third after leading off the Lady Trojan second inning with a triple. The other two hits, both singles off the bat of Peyton Fleming, also went for naught.
After Warhill took a 1-0 lead in the third, the hosts evened the count in the bottom of the frame. Abby Spangler reached base on an error. She stole second and took third on a passed ball before scoring on Dani Foster’s ground out.
Lion pitcher Colby Norris and her defense held the Lady Trojans in check the rest of the way. A controversial turn of events in the fifth set the stage for the visitors to move back in front to stay with two runs. Then a double, triple, and single provided another pair of runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The decision dropped New Kent to 13-5. This Thursday’s doubleheader at Bruton closes the regular season. The Lady Trojans are scheduled to host a conference quarterfinal game on Memorial Day.
