Powered by 28 points from senior guard Adrienne Miles, Charles City’s Lady Panthers cruised to a 53-32 victory over the visiting King & Queen Lady Tigers during a Feb. 5 Tidewater District contest.
Miles set the tempo early on in the contest, scoring the game’s first six points and establishing a lead the hosts would never relinquish. Only a Trenisha Morris jumper accounted for the lone score for the Lady Tigers in the first quarter as Charles City led 9-2.
Trailing 14-6 with three minutes remaining until halftime, the visitors made their biggest surge of the night. Back-to-back jumpers by Destiny Davis trimmed the lead to four for the Lady Panthers. After a Sydney Richard free throw, Morris banked in a jumper to cut the deficit to three (15-12).
But Charles City countered the charge by the visitors. A Miles’ trifecta from the wing was followed by four consecutive points from center Kiandra Randall to hand the hosts a 22-12 lead heading into the break.
Lady Panthers scoring came from a variety of players in the third quarter, as the hosts pushed the lead to 19 by the end of the frame (36-17). The lead grew to 26 after a Taylor Bradby lay-in, as the Panthers garnered the victory.
After the game, Lady Panther head coach VaShaun Otey spoke about the energy level in the first half.
“We were tired from last night’s game against King William,” he said, referencing a grinding 30-27 victory on the road. “We had dead legs tonight and it showed.
“I tried to get the bench some playing time and experience because we were tired,” Otey continued. “Once we got the starters back in, we pushed the tempo and that led us to open up the lead and get the win.”
Miles’ 28 led all scorers in the game as Charles City improved to 10-8. Randall and Hailey Holmes tossed in six apiece, Bradby and Veondra Brown added four apiece, Sydney Richard contributed three, and Meryah Bates chipped in with two. Morris’ 16 points was tops for the Lady Tigers.
