Former New Kent football star inducted into CNU Hall of Fame

George Jones (center), a former standout running back for New Kent High School who continued his playing career at Christopher Newport University, was inducted into CNU's Hall of Fame during a Feb. 7 ceremony. He is flanked by his high school coach, Fred Birchett (left), and college coach, Matt Kelchner. Jones helped lead New Kent to the state Group AA football final in 2002. At CNU, he was voted USA South Offensive Rookie of the Year as a wide receiver his freshman year. He went on to become CNU's all-time leader in career catches with 132 and a two-time first team all-conference wide receiver. His 1,830 career receiving yards rank third all-time while his 3,154 all-purpose yards are fourth. He scored 29 touchdowns, sixth all-time at CNU.
