LaPrade, Sanders win titles as New Kent finishes fifth at state championships

New Kent’s B.C. LaPrade and Cade Sanders garnered state championship victories as the Trojans finished in fifth place at the Group 3A State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 20.

LaPrade has no trouble topping David Giantonio of Christiansburg in a 22-10 decision, earning a title at the 145-pound weight class. LaPrade won last year’s state title in the 138-pound division. Sanders defeated Nick Giantonio of Christiansburg in the 160-pound finals, winning with a 5-3 decision. VMI bound Blake Hohman finished second in the championships, falling 3-1 to Christiansburg’s Creed Lumpp in the 152-pound battle.

New Kent scored 59.5 points in the meet for their fifth place finish. Christiansburg dominated the state meet, amassing 153 points, almost 50 more points than state runner-up Cave Spring (84.5). New Kent rival Poquoson rounded out the top three with 67.5 points.
