York’s Lady Falcons combined aggressive base running with the pitching of Chelsey Evans to shut out New Kent’s host Lady Trojans in Tuesday softball action.

Evans fired a two-hitter while the Falcon offense produced all the runs the team needed in the first two innings on the way to a 3-0 win. She struck out nine and did not allow a walk.

The hosts never threatened during the contest. Madison Beasley singled in the second inning and Stephanie Torrence hit safely in the fourth, but that was the extent of the Lady Trojan attack.

“We were a little bit flat today and didn’t have that energy that we had Saturday,” said Lady Trojan coach Nicole O’Bier, looking back on New Kent’s upset of Warhill.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to change tempo,” she added. “It’s like I’ve always said, it comes down to who makes errors and who doesn’t.”

An error on a Falcon first inning steal of second base set up the visitors’ initial run. After singling, Evans successfully stole the base, scoring moments later on a single by Katie Russell.

In the next frame, Hayley Winfree doubled into the left field corner and scored on a Molly Rogerson single. Then after Carly Breen reached on a fielder’s choice, another throwing error on her steal of second enabled her to race home for a 3-0 lead.

New Kent starting pitcher Destiny Eberhard gave up the three runs on six hits before getting relief help from Brittany LaPrade to start the fourth inning. LaPrade pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way, scattering three hits.

The decision dropped New Kent to 6-4.
