New Kent’s Trojans surrendered a goal barely two minutes into Tuesday night’s soccer match with Poquoson’s invading Islanders. Unfortunately for the hosts, that early score set the tone for the contest.
By halftime, the Islanders were firmly in control with a 3-0 lead on the way to a 4-1 win, dropping the Trojans to 2-6-1.
“That first goal took the wind out of our sails,” said Trojan coach Keith Grant. “Unfortunately, we did not play well.”
The hosts managed just seven shots while Poquoson unleashed 15. Dylan Paul’s line drive shot bounded into the net off Trojan keeper Darren Jones’ hands for the early lead. The visitors’ Aaron Taylor scored at the 25-minute mark and again just before halftime to create the 3-0 advantage.
New Kent averted a shutout just over five minutes into the second half on a shot by Darren McCaughan. Moments later, however, Poquoson got the goal back on Matt Gilliam’s penalty kick.
Jones, in goal for the first half, managed five saves. Justin Cox took over in the second half, also recording five saves.
