Allen, Smith named female athletes of year at respective universities

Karley Allen, a 2012 graduate from New Kent High School, and Deborah Smith, a former standout from Charles City High School, were both named female athletes of the year at their respective universities.

Allen received the honor from UVA-Wise during a recent ceremony. A rising junior, Allen was named to the All-Mountain East and All-Atlantic Region first teams in volleyball. She led the conference in kills, was third in passing efficiency, and eighth in digs.

Smith earned her honor as a member of North Carolina A&T’s women’s basketball team. Smith led the team in scoring, averaging 13 points per game and was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) all-conference third team.
