New Kent unable to overcome Warhill scoring surges

New Kent’s Lady Trojan field hockey team had its moments Saturday morning while taking on Warhill’s visiting Lions in a makeup contest. The hosts sliced an early Lion lead in half and held off the visitors for most of the second half, but surges in both halves lifted Warhill to a 7-1 win.
“[Warhill] killed us with their speed and passing,” said Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth after his team dropped to 3-9. “I told the girls they played well until [Warhill] finally wore us down.”
Warhill punched in the game’s first two goals before Clenis Lloyd broke New Kent’s scoring drought with 12:32 left in the first half. The Lions, however, added two quick goals to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.
“After we got our goal, that sort of pepped us up and we played them a lot more even,” Duckworth said.
After the break, New Kent’s defense held off the visitors until the 13-minute mark of the second half. But three goals over a seven-minute span put the affair out of reach, with the final score ending the contest with just over six minutes left.
Lloyd’s score was the lone shot managed by the Lady Trojan offense. Warhill launched 15 shots, eight of which were stopped by Lady Trojan goalkeeper Kindred Grey.
