Shots fail to fall for New Kent, Poquoson wins 50-28

When the ball is not falling through the hoop, chance of winning a basketball game becomes remote. New Kent’s Lady Trojans can testify to that following Tuesday night’s encounter with Poquoson’s visiting Islanders.
The hosts shot a smidgen under seven percent from the floor (2-for-30) in the first half, and recorded a mere three field goals through three quarters. Poquoson walked away with a 50-28 victory.
“We’ve got to make baskets,” said Lady Trojan coach Vann Baker after her team dropped to 0-10.
“We could have had 18-20 points just off foul shots alone, so we’ve got to take advantage of those opportunities,” she said.
At halftime, six points showed on the New Kent side of the scoreboard. By then, however, Poquoson had not fully capitalized on the hosts’ shooting woes. New Kent remained in the game, trailing by 15 (21-6).
But any hope of a Lady Trojan rally quickly dissipated when play resumed. Islander guards Sandra Fan and Taylor Moore combined for a trio of three-pointers to extend the advantage to 30-6.
“The defense played well,” Baker said. “But we’ve got to be able to match them on offense and make shots.”
Nakesha Glover’s 12 points led New Kent. Kayla Davis finished with eight while Brynne Jones scored five and Kelsey Yates added two. Fan led all scorers with 20.
The Lady Trojans, meanwhile, continue to search for their first win since the 2013-14 season.
“Eventually, we’ll get that win,” Baker said. “We’ll like that, feel confident, and hopefully do it again.”
