New Kent finishes second in season opening track meet at Charles City

New Kent’s Jon Swartout won the boys’ 1600 meter run while twin brothers Josh and Joe Dixon each claimed a throwing event as the Trojans earned a second place finish at Charles City’s regular season track meet Tuesday afternoon.

On the boys’ side, New Kent scored 128 points, good enough for second place out of seven teams at the meet. Middlesex finished on top with 153 points, with Armstrong finishing in third place with 121 points. Host Charles City placed fourth with 32, while Washington & Lee (26), Grove Christian (8), and Richmond Christian (3) rounded out the scoring.

Swartout posted a time of 5:01.36 in his run, easily outdistancing by 50 seconds his next closest competitor. Josh Dixon’s heave of 39’6½” in the shot earned him the top spot, while brother Joe launched the discus 121’1” to stake claim to first in that respective event.

On the girls’ side, the Charles City Lady Panther quartet of Veondra Brown, Jaelah Wyatt, Shanijah Brown, and Dayonna Henderson orchestrated a time of 57.26 in the 4×100 meter relay to take gold in the event.

Charles City’s girl accumulated 14 points, good enough for a fifth place finish. New Kent’s Lady Trojans finished in third with 34 points, trailing event winner Middlesex (200.5) and runner-up Armstrong (101.5). Washington & Lee’s 29 was good for fourth, while Richmond Christian completed the scoring with two.
