Without pitcher Keanna Motley on the mound, Charles City’s Lady Panthers have struggled putting the ball across the plate. And when they did, especially against Colonial Beach’s Kenzie Cox, it didn’t result well for the hosts.
Cox accounted for 11 RBIs and three home runs as the visiting Lady Drifters routed Charles City 40-1 in the Apr. 4 contest.
Colonial Beach jumped out 4-0 early in the first inning, but an unassisted double-play by Lady Panther third baseman Taylor Richardson slowed down the attack. The visitors ended the inning with a 7-0 advantage and maintained it heading into the bottom of the second.
Charles City’s bright spot saw senior Jasmine Dabney reach base on a walk. Two subsequent steals and a passed ball allowed her to streak to home plate to put the hosts on the board and trail 7-1 heading into the third inning.
But it was all downhill for the Lady Panthers. After building a 12-run lead (13-1), Cox would send a blast to center field to her first home run. After batting around, she would send another shot to the outfield, this time with the bases loaded, to bring in four more runs and pushed the lead to 24-1. Colonial Beach added one more before exiting the inning. Cox added her third home run at the opening stages of the fourth frame as the Lady Drifters coasted to the win.
After the game, Charles City head coach Lauren Wood commented about the struggles from the mound.
“It’s still an issue,” Wood said, pointing to numerous walks and hits given up in the game. “It hurts us because we still don’t have players in positions that benefit us.
“We’ve been committing a series of errors and that is because of our situation,” she added. “I’m hoping that we can resolve it soon so that we can be more efficient and have a better result on the scoreboard.”
Charles City, who drops to 2-2 on the season, also did not register a hit in the contest.
