Bringing in a new sport to a school system and transitioning into competitive play takes time, hard work, and dedication from both players and the coaching staff. For Charles City’s High School newly formed co-ed soccer team, a combination of progression and a group of athletes have first-year head coach Grant Martin’s expectations of developing a successful program.
The Panthers hosted its first ever soccer game Friday afternoon. And while the outcome result in an 8-0 setback to visiting George Wythe, Martin commented on the improvement of the newly formed unit.
“There is a big difference in this team from when we started,” said the head coach as he referred to a 13-0 loss at the Bulldogs to start the season. “This team has better fitness and this group knows soccer.
“They are starting to buy into the coaching and that is what you want in a first year program,” Martin added. “They work hard and you can see it. It is a testament about who these kids are.”
Charles City held steadfast with the visiting Bulldogs in the early going. It wasn’t until the thirteenth minute when Bulldog forward Luis Aldrez scored the first of what would be a four goal game. However, the Panthers would only allow one more goal before heading into halftime intermission.
After exchanging ends, the visitors struck quickly thanks to a penalty kick and additional score by Marvin Crenshaw. Aldrez added two more quick scores as the visitors sealed the deal.
The scoreboard didn’t dismay Martin, who only expects better things in the future for the program.
“This team put on a great show for their family and friends,” he said. “To have the first soccer game in Charles City High School history is pretty amazing.
“I’m proud of our composure and how we played within ourselves,” Martin concluded.
Charles City attempted five shots on goal, with junior Kylee Brinkley accounting for three of them. Panther goalkeeper Michael Grubbs made four saves in the match.
Charles City’s record drops to 0-3 on the season.
