Despite two first place finishes by distance runner Jon Swartout and Joe Dixon’s gold medal in the boys’ shot, New Kent’s Trojans had to settle for second place overall during Charles City’s Invitational last Saturday.
The Trojans accumulated 103.7 points, falling shy of eventual winner Henrico’s 105.5 in the contest. Prince George rounded out the top three with 93.7 points. Host Charles City finished tenth out of 14 teams, garnishing 16 points.
Swartout accumulated times of 2:11.96 and 4:48.73 in the boys’ 800 and 1600 meter run, respectively, to take gold in the event. Dixon won the shot with a heave of 43’11½”.
For the girls, New Kent’s Kayla Davis cleared 4’8” in the high jump as the team amassed 62 points, good enough for a fifth place finish and falling just six points shy of second place overall.
While Brunswick’s girls easily claimed the team title with 117.5, a close team race saw the Lady Trojans fall behind runner-up Thomas Dale (68), Prince George (66), and Mathews (63). The Lady Panthers of Charles City racked up seven points, finishing 11th at the Invitational.
