Ashby Holsapple’s goal with time running out in the first half proved to be all that was needed for New Kent’s Lady Trojans to turn back Northumberland’s visiting Indians. But the hosts added an insurance goal late in the second half, compliments of Emily Montecalvo, on the way to a 2-0 victory and the .500 mark.
With Thursday night’s win, the Lady Trojans are now 6-6, prompting Lady Trojan coach Matt Duckworth to add, “It’s nice to get a win.
“We’ve beaten [Northumberland] before,” said the coach. “We passed the ball better tonight. We just didn’t close when we got the ball inside the circle.”
That problem loomed large in the first half. Frequent attacking plus eight penalty corners, including a string of five in a row, failed to yield dividends for the hosts. But the ninth– and final of the half– paid off.
With time winding down, Holsapple, who triggered the play, unleashed a shot past Indian keeper Trinity Taylor to break the scoreless deadlock. Only :04.3 showed on the clock.
Just past the midway point of half number two, Peyton Slater appeared to give her team a 2-0 edge from long range, but her goal was nullified after the ball caromed into the goal off another player’s foot.
No matter. Six minutes later and off another penalty corner situation, Montecalvo punched in her score out of a crowd in front of the Indian goal.
For the game, the Lady Trojans managed seven shots and were awarded 17 penalty corners compared to zero shots and four corners for the visitors. Northumberland’s first corner came with 16 minutes left in the contest.
