Utilizing their team speed advantage, Jamestown’s Eagles quickly asserted dominance over New Kent’s host Lady Trojans. The hosts could not keep pace as the visitors opened a 13-point advantage after one quarter and never looked back on the way to a 62-25 basketball win.

“It’s tough to win if you don’t do the little things well. The other side will exploit them,” Lady Trojan coach Neko Burson said after Saturday night’s loss.

Little things like making baskets and taking care of the ball plagued the hosts. New Kent sank just one of 11 first quarter shots while turning the ball over 10 times. Jamestown, meanwhile, shot just over 50 percent from the floor in building a 16-3 lead.

Jada Hooker converted New Kent’s lone field goal, coming at the 2:11 mark of the opening quarter to make the score 9-3. But eight minutes would pass before the hosts could score again, this time on a Kayla Tirado basket. By then, however, the Eagles had tossed in 15 unanswered points to lead 31-3.

“I’ve been preaching attack, attack, attack, but we settled for jump shots,” Burson said.

The game’s bright spot for the hosts occurred just before the break. A 9-0 run triggered by Tirado’s basket closed out the first half, but they could draw no closer than the 31-12 halftime score.

Tirado led New Kent, now 5-12, with eight points. Haley Hyndshaw totaled six followed by Brynne Jones’ five and three each from Hooker and Kelsey Yates.

Anaya Simmons and Corinthian Williams packed a one-two punch for the Eagles with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
