In search for a much-needed win, New Kent’s Lady Trojans hosted the visiting Lady Falcons from York to right the track. For the hosts, surviving a close opening set provided the momentum for the Bay Rivers District victory.
New Kent swept the contest 25-22, 25-11, 25-12 to push their record to 10-9 and above the .500 mark.
In the first set, the outmatched Lady Falcons found themselves training 15-8 when they orchestrated a surge. After cutting the lead to five (17-12), York took advantage of New Kent miscues to tie the score at 22 apiece. But an ace by Lady Trojan Clara Foster sparked the final three points for the set win.
The next two sets were dominated by the Lady Trojans as they overwhelmed York. The front line for the hosts stifled the Lady Falcons attempts to get the ball over the net, while New Kent’s back line provided great serving and kept the ball from hitting the floor as few times as possible.
New Kent head coach Cynthia Burnett talked about the adjustments made by her team in the victory.
“Tonight was the first night we used the two-man service receive,” she said. “The more we did it, the more confidence the passers got.
“Our passes were on and our setter could run whatever offense we wanted to,” Burnett added. “Tonight, we wanted to run a quick tempo and fast offense. It was awesome and everybody got in some good touches on the ball.
“It was a very gratifying team effort tonight,” she concluded.
