Sometimes you have to score just a little more than your opponents do.

That was the case as New Kent’s Lady Trojans won a defensive minded contest over the Poquoson Lady Islanders 35-30 during a sluggish Dec. 10 Bay Rivers District contest that saw poor free throw shooting and a physical contest.

New Kent led 14-8 at the halftime break when the hosts found their first offensive spurt of the night. A 7-4 run to begin the third along with a defense that held Poquoson scoreless from the field four minutes into the third quarter provided some comfort for the Lady Trojans.

But Poquoson rallied behind Tyran Weems, who had a distinct advantage over the shorter Lady Trojans. Her basket started a 9-0 run for the Lady Islanders, resulting in the game being tied at 21 apiece. But Lady Trojan McKenna Mueller steal and score halted the run and gave the hosts a two-point advantage heading into the fourth.

Madison Foley’s traditional three-point play upped the hosts advantage to five (26-21) before New Kent added six more points to stretch the lead out to double digits (32-22). Poquoson failed to close the gap as New Kent claimed the win.

After the contest, Lady Trojans head coach Neko Burson talked about the win at home.

“It’s always a good feeling to come in and win a game, especially on your home court,” he said. “That is one of our goals.

“[Poquoson] is a good, solid, defensive team and that’s one of the aras we wanted to focus on,” Burson continued. “We knew this game was going to be a low scoring game, but we broke down what we needed to do.”

Foley’s 16 points led New Kent (2-1) in scoring. Mueller tossed in six, Haley Hyndshaw contributed five, Hannah Drewer scored three, the duo of Katelyn Norman and Ryan Bonsky each added two, and Yazmine Brown chipped in with one.
