After starting off the season 5-0, New Kent’s Trojans looked to close out the week with a victory over the invading Tabb Tigers. Unfortunately for the hosts, a reality check along with the visitors exposing several weaknesses handed New Kent its first loss of the year.
Tabb’s Tigers jumped out early on the hosts before cruising to an 11-0 victory during Friday afternoon’s Bay Rivers District contest.
The visitors scored twice in the top of the first and the top of the third to jump out to a 4-0 advantage over New Kent. New Kent’s best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second base, but a pop fly out by Gavin Richardson along with Carson Seely being thrown out on a tag ended the scoring threat.
Meanwhile, Tabb pitcher Kaden Hilburger delivered the heat on the mound and then added to his own cause. In the top of the fifth, Hilburger connected with his bat, blasting a ball over the right field fence to up the score to 5-0. Six additional runs in the inning along with holding New Kent scoreless in the bottom of the inning ended the contest via mercy rule.
After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan commented that this game was a teaching moment for his squad.
“We need to stay together as a team and we will be just fine,” he said. “We are going to lose games and we are going to win and lose as a team.
“We have to get more offense earlier in the game,” Ronan continued. “In the third inning, we had something going but they made a great play. I want them to feel what losing is all about and they needed to feel this for sure.”
New Kent drops to 5-1 on the season.
