Taking lumps in early years can be what establishes success down the line in athletics. New Kent’s Trojans are hoping that’s the case for this year’s soccer team.

The hosting Trojans fell 6-0 to the visiting Warhill Lions in the Bay Rivers District contest. The loss also keeps the team winless on the year.

New Kent came out aggressively, but their goalkeeper Aaron Harris was tested early and often. Warhill’s Kaleb Maramot was able to get by the goalie with 26:30 on the clock to give the Lions a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

New Kent’s best opportunity to score came moments later. Trojan forward Jack Porter was able to get a shot off, with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. But the ball deflected off the upper goal post and bounced back into the field. Instead, Warhill’s Hayden Bright pushed the ball down the field for the visitor’s second goal of the night.

Unfortunately for New Kent, the guests continued to score in the opening half. A Jaisaun Dickson-Crow penalty kick along with an Arvin Picardo easy goal bumped the advantage up to 4-0. Toss in two more goals in the early phases of the second half and Warhill closed out the game with the win.

New Kent Head Coach Derek Yates addressed the defensive lapses in the contest that led to the team’s defeat.

“I am a firm believer that it’s a team effort and the goalie has 10 players in front of him,” the coach commented. “It should never come down to the goalie making the save.

“The shots should not get off to the goalie and right now, it’s growing pains,” Yates continued. “Our team just has to find themselves and we have to improve our communication.”

New Kent’s record drops to 0-6.
