With eight seniors on the diamond and feeder programs contributing to recent sustained growth, New Kent’s Trojans looked like the experienced team with two opening road wins. Friday night’s home opener against the visiting Warhill Lions yielded similar success.

Behind the pitching of Nick Redman, New Kent cruised to a 10-0 victory over their Bay Rivers District rival, winning in the five-inning affair.

A Jack Swynford double and walk by Carson Seely positioned the Trojans in control early in the bottom half of the first. A Joe Buchman double drove in his teammates, providing the hosts a lead they would never relinquish. Two more runs at the bottom of the frame allowed New Kent to take a 4-0 lead when Redman returned to the mound at the top of the second.

The performance by Redman saw him fan seven batters and allow only three hits in the contest. Meanwhile New Kent tacked on six more runs over the next four frames, with their final run in the fifth sealing the contest via mercy rule.

After the contest, New Kent Trojans Head Coach Trevor Ronan talked about his team’s efforts and an early outlook for the season.

“It starts off with our lead batter,” Ronan said, complimenting Swynford’s ability to get on base early in the opening contest. “When he gets on, it gets everyone else going.

“I feel really confident, and everyone is gelling together,” the coach continued, highlighting his eight seniors. “That is big, and everyone has good energy. We are getting along so that’s working.”

New Kent remains undefeated with a record of 3-0 on the season.
