New Kent’s Lady Trojans entered the Aug. 31 contest looking to avenge a loss to the Monticello Lady Mustangs. After dropping an earlier contest 3-1 to Monticello, it was gallant effort and pushing through an extra session that resulted in a home opening win for the Lady Trojans.

New Kent defeated Monticello 1-0 to take the win.

For most of the contest, both teams’ defenses fought off each other. New Kent Lady Trojans goalie Brie Otey fought off shot attempts from Lady Mustangs Lauren Garrett, but the hosts failed to muster any offense on their end.

New Kent’s best attempt to score came in the end of the second quarter. Jordan Lilley shot attempt at the 2:45 mark was denied, while Olivia Allen’s attempt with 10 seconds left was denied by Lady Mustang goalkeeper Lauren Garnett.

Both teams battled in the second half, failing to convert on penalty corners for score. The result of shutouts on both sides sent the game into a 10-minute overtime and a seven-on-seven session.

The Lady Trojans received the much-needed break during the extra frame. Allen was able to break away from Monticello’s defense. She weaved her way around Garnett, connecting with a slapshot that found the back of the net for the game winning goal.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Cristen Sickal spoke about how the team thrives in extra frames.

“Historically, we thrive on seven-on-seven sessions and that is the bread and butter,” the coach said. “Once we went into the session, I knew we had it.

“Our program always conditions hard as we don’t have subs,” Sickal continued. “They know they have to work hard, and this game sets the trajectory for the season. I am confident going into the rest of this season.”

New Kent’s Lady Trojans improves their record to 2-1.
