New Kent ties Poquoson in girls’ soccer on Senior Night
A hard-fought May 9 Senior Night contest between New Kent’s Lady Trojans and the visiting Poquoson Lady Islanders on the pitch went as far as it could go. In the end, the game resulted in a 1-1 tie between two teams jockeying postseason position.
The game was physical in nature, as each team tried to feed off energy from each other. And it would be the Lady Trojans who put a dent in the scoreboard first. New Kent’s Olivia Allen breakaway led to her punching the ball in from 25 yards out, providing the hosts an early lead in the first half. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of New Kent as they headed into halftime.
After the intermission, New Kent goalie Emily Ward continued to deny shot after shot attempt by Poquoson. And it appeared her efforts along with the Lady Trojans’ defense would be enough to capture the win.
But with less than two minutes remaining, Poquoson’s last attempt to score was successful, as Quinn Sparkman’s shot was just out of reach of Ward’s attempt for a deflection, knotting the game at one as time expired in regulation. Neither team would score for the remainder of the contest as the game ended in a tie.
The Lady Trojans’ record stands at 5-7-1.
