New Kent runs win streak to a dozen games
New Kent’s Lady Trojans are hitting their stride at the right time, taking down a former state champion in a Sept. 24 Bay Rivers District match-up.
New Kent defeated Bruton 25-20, 25-19, 25-19, upping their win streak to a dozen straight.
The Lady Trojans were aggressive at the net, despite the height of Bruton twins Mina and Jolie Faw. The hosts converted 38 kills in the game, led by Leah Rounds.
In the opening set, aces by Rounds and teammate Abby McLaughlin sparked the first set victory for the Lady Trojans. In set two, it was junior Ava Nieto who lifted New Kent, converting one of her 10 kills at the net. And despite the games being close for most of the night, aces by McLaughlin in the third frame proved to be difference makers as the hosts swept Bruton.
After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Stuart Burnett spoke about his conversation and team meeting.
“I was having meetings the last few days with the players and every girl said that this is the most family team they have been on,” the coach said. “There are no cliques and even the players who aren’t getting in feel a part of this team.
“When that comes together, there is no limit to what a team can do.”
The Lady Trojans’ record is 13-2.
