After earning victory number one on the road at Tabb, New Kent’s Trojans looked to give their home crowd the same type of treatment as they hosted Jamestown on Friday night as part of Homecoming festivities. The result would be something the hosts could celebrate when the final horn sounded.
New Kent defeated Jamestown 14-7, notching win number two in a row in front of the homecoming crowd.
The Trojans would be the first team to score in the contest. With 1:29 left in the first quarter, New Kent drove 60 yards down the field on Jamestown, with Nathaniel Christian toting the ball into the end zone from five yards out to cap the drive and help the hosts to a 7-0 lead.
Jamestown took advantage of their next possession on office. Kicking off the second quarter of play, Eagle quarterback Benjamin Hanchett took to the air, connecting on several passes and rocking the Trojan secondary. With the defense now spread out, a handoff to teammate Ja’quari Waller led to a 20-yard touchdown carry for the visitors. With the extra point, the score became tied at seven apiece. Both teams exchanged turnovers and failed to muster anything in the remainder of the frame, leading to halftime being a 7-7 deadlock.
New Kent received the opening kickoff in the second half, with the offense taking the field just past their own 20-yard line. From there, the hosts orchestrated a masterful drive over the next six minutes, driving nearly 80 yards down the field. The result of the offense success was reaped when Christian carried the ball in once again from the five-yard line, returning the advantage to New Kent (14-7).
In the fourth quarter, Jamestown made one final attempt to put points on the scoreboard. With four minutes remaining in regulation, Jamestown began to drive the ball down the field. New Kent, however, forced the Eagles into a fourth and long situation. On the play, Hanchett’s pass fell incomplete, returning possession to the Trojans. From that point, New Kent milked the last three minutes of the game, sealing the win and making homecoming night a successful one.
After the contest, New Kent Head Coach John McCauley spoke about the win.
“We had some player smissing tonight, but in the end we won the game,” he said. “We played and won as a team and I am proud of this group as they continued to fight and not give up on each other.”
New Kent improves to 2-4 on the season.
