New Kent continues strong volleyball season, sweeps York
New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ volleyball team march to contending for a championship continued Tuesday night. This time, a valiant York Lady Falcons’ team was game to take on a Lady Trojans’ team who has only lost to undefeated Grafton.
But even the visitors from York couldn’t derail New Kent as the Lady Trojans swept the Lady Falcons 25-15, 25-8, 26-24.
The hosts trailed by two (10-8) early in the first set before Fallon Greenawalt’s kill swung momentum. A spike and score by Leah Rounds led to premiere serving from Ava Nieto, whose two consecutive aces gave New Kent an 18-13 lead. New Kent held firm to capture the set with Abby McLaughlin’s aces closing it out.
In set two, the hosts jumped out to an 11-1 lead over York, with younger players stepping in to get some on-court experience. New Kent built up a 23-8 lead before McLaughlin once again closed the frame out with two aces.
In the third set, the Lady Falcons battled hard, staying within striking distance with New Kent. York’s effort was evident, as they tied the game at 24 apiece, forcing a “win by two” scenario. But that scenario didn’t last long, as New Kent earned an advantage and scored once again to finish off the match.
New Kent improves to 17-2 on the season.
