New Kent’s Lady Trojans took an early lead and held on in the waning moments of the contest as they defeated the visiting Jamestown Lady Eagles 42-38 in Monday night’s Bay Rivers District game.

Early on it seemed New Kent would have no trouble taking down the Eagles. After jumping out 9-4, the Lady Trojans stretched the lead to nine thanks to Rayne Otey, taking a 17-8 lead into the second quarter.

But the second frame was all Jamestown as they switched to a different defensive front. The ploy was successful for the Lady Eagles, holding the hosts to only four points in the second quarter while scoring 13. The result was a tie at 21 apiece heading into the halftime break.

Emerging from the intermission, New Kent created breathing room as Anna Hetzel drained a three-pointer and teammate Evie Davenport tossed in eight in the frame, returning the lead to hosts 36-30. However, in the fourth quarter, Jamestown chipped away in the contest, slowly creeping back into the game.

The Lady Eagles were within two (40-38) with less than 20 seconds when New Kent’s Amiyah Armstead scored in the paint to stretch the lead to four. Jamestown failed to muster any additional offense, allowing the Lady Trojans to snap their three-game losing skid.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach James Montgomery commented about his team playing the game instead of worrying about the score.

“We let things go at times while playing the scoreboard,” he commented. “I tried to emphasize how possessions just have to mean more.

“We take all this time doing the work, which means we can’t play casual,” the head coach continued. “We played better in the second half, and we had to grind out stops. We made each possession count and made more meaningful shots.”

Davenport led New Kent (5-9) with 13 points. Armstead finished with eight, Otey tossed in seven, Delaney Montgomery contributed five, Alivia Snow pumped in four, Hetzel finished with three, and Khylie Gore chipped in with two.
