New Kent’s Trojans continue to remain unblemished in boys’ basketball action. But it hasn’t come without its challenges.
New Kent defeated the visiting Bruton Panthers 61-53 in a Friday night game that saw the Trojans pull away late.
For most of the contest, both teams played on even terms and could not build a lead bigger than two points. After the first frame, Bruton led 11-9. By the time halftime hit, the visitors led by one (23-22).
New Kent’s Marty Wray drained a three-pointer to begin the third quarter, bestowing the lead to New Kent. New Kent’s lead grew four before Bruton was able to make a dent. But the end of the third saw the hosts execute better offensively and taking a 48-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
Wray’s trifecta gave the Trojans their first double-digit lead of the game (51-39). After another Wray shot pushed the lead up to 14, Bruton made a furious rally, going on a 13-4 run to cut New Kent’s advantage back down to five (57-52). However, another Wray basket iced the contest as New Kent captured the win.
The Trojans (17-0) received a game high 22 points from Wray. Will Ross and Kyle Diggs also finished in double figures with 13 and 12, respectively. Christian Joyner pumped in six, Khristopher Leeper tossed in four, and the duo of Dylan Bowman and Michael Hetzel chipped in with two apiece.
