Visiting Poquoson scored three goals in each half and didn’t afford New Kent’s host Lady Trojans many scoring opportunities in claiming a 6-0 Bay Rivers District soccer win.

The March 31 contest was New Kent’s first in 11 days as spring break interrupted the schedule, and Lady Trojan coach Chad Honeycutt was not pleased with his team’s effort.

“It’s tough to come back from spring break and jump right into a game,” he said after his team fell to 0-2 in the district and 2-2 overall.

“I think this was a district game we could have been competitive in, but we were missing some people and we played flat,” he said. “We had some opportunities, but we didn’t play our top game 100 percent of the time.”

Poquoson dominated early, allowing New Kent only one scoring opportunity, that coming on a corner kick, in the first 12 minutes. Then with 28:37 left in the first half, the Islanders’ Allison Aycock unleashed a shot that was blocked by New Kent’s defense. Teammate Laura Hanson picked up the carom and punched in the first of her two goals on the night to put the visitors in front to stay.

Two minutes later, Aycock booted an open shot that New Kent keeper Laura Smith deflected with both hands, but momentum carried the ball into the corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

New Kent’s defense rose to the occasion as the Islanders set up a corner kick with at the 17-minute mark. Lady Trojan defender Katie Yates blocked a Poquoson shot and cleared the ball out of the goal area. But with just over two minutes left in the half, Hanson netted her second score and 3-0 halftime bulge.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Islanders’ Liz Gore took a pass from Aycock and pounded in a close-range shot to up the count to 4-0.

New Kent got its best opportunity to cut into the Islander lead at the 27-minute mark as Anna Black dribbled past defenders for a one-on-one encounter with keeper Corrinn Jasinski. But Black kicked the ball directly at Jasinski who made an easy save.

Seconds later, Gore registered her second goal. Then with just under 12 minutes left, Morgan Leary closed out the scoring with a long, looping shot that sailed over Smith into the net.

New Kent had chances to avert a shutout in the final minutes, but an offsides violation nullified one opportunity. Down the stretch, Jasinski stopped a shot off the foot of Kirsten Schunk, and another open shot by Black sailed wide.

Poquoson pounded 32 shots at the New Kent net with Smith recording 17 saves. New Kent managed seven shots with Islander keepers Jasinski and Nicci Robbs combining for five saves.
