On the mound, Poquoson lefthander Kyle Crockett befuddled New Kent’s batters. The host Trojans managed just one hit off Crockett in four innings as the Islanders cruised to a 12-0 Bay Rivers District decision in five innings last Wednesday.

“[Crockett’s] a good pitcher. He throws strikes and hits his spots,” Trojan coach Ronnie Cox said. “We didn’t underestimate him. We knew he’d pitch well.”

Mitchell Baker became the only Trojan to touch Crockett, jumping on the Islander hurler’s first pitch with two away in the second inning for a line drive single into center field. Baker stole second but was stranded, ending the Trojans’ threat to get back in the game after Poquoson had scored solo runs in both the first and second frames.

The Islanders tacked on another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead before breaking the game open with a seven-run fourth.

“[Poquoson] put the ball in play with authority, and then they’ve got a guy on the mound controlling the game,” Cox said.

Adam Otey recorded New Kent’s other hit in the fifth after Crockett had been relieved. The outcome dropped the Trojans to 5-10 in the district.
