New Kent Parks and Recreation has received a matching grant from the U.S. Golf Association to help fund participation in the National Hook a Kid on Golf Program.

The program for kids age 8-15 who have little or no golf experience is scheduled for Aug. 11-15, 5-7:30 p.m. each day at Brickshire Golf Club. Support is also being received from the Virginia State Golf Association and local golf pro Phil Woodrum.

Volunteer instructors teach kids golf skills, etiquette, and history. Each child receives a set of starter clubs, shirt, and other items.

The grant program is based on household income, number in household, and desire to participate. Those not eligible for the grant can take part for a fee.

Applications are available by calling 966-8502 and must be completed and returned by June 1. Notice of acceptance will be given by July 1.

Individuals and groups are being asked to donate to support the program. Volunteer instructors are also being sought. Anyone interested in participating or donating should contact Kim Turner or Chris Eacho at 966-8502 or kcturner@co.newkent.state.va.us.
