NK tennis teams post wins
New Kent’s boys’ tennis team topped a pair of visiting Bay Rivers District foes by similar 8-1 scores last week. The Trojans whipped Smithfield on Thursday and repeated the effort by turning back Warhill on Friday.

Smithfield’s Packers punched in the deciding goal with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period to hand New Kent’s host Trojans a 2-1 setback last Wednesday in Bay Rivers District soccer. The outcome once again denied the Trojans their first win of the season as they fell to 0-4-1 in the district and 0-7-2 overall. “It was a good battle and we had our chances, but we just couldn’t finish,” Trojan coach Craig Aliff said. A six-run burst in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 deadlock, propelling New Kent’s Lady Trojans past Poquoson’s visiting Islanders 7-3 in a crucial Bay Rivers’ District softball encounter last Wednesday. The victory not only avenged a 3-0, no-hit shutout last month at the hands of the Islanders, but also maintained at least a half-game lead in the district standings for the first place Lady Trojans. The host Trojans managed just one hit off Crockett in four innings as the Islanders cruised to a 12-0 Bay Rivers District decision in five innings last Wednesday. “[Crockett’s] a good pitcher. He throws strikes and hits his spots,” Trojan coach Ronnie Cox said. “We didn’t underestimate him. A late second half goal enabled Bruton’s Panthers to overtake New Kent’s host Lady Trojans at 1-1. The teams then played to a standoff in two overtime periods to settle for a Bay Rivers District soccer tie. Charles City’s Lady Panthers scored 83 points, edging Sussex’s 80, to capture first overall in a five-team track meet on April 29 on their home oval. Franklin scored 70 followed by Surry’s 57 and Chesterfield Community’s 35. Charles City’s boys, meanwhile, finished second with 85 points to Sussex’s 105. Surry placed third with 67.5 while Franklin scored 26.5 and Chesterfield Community totaled 19. Chiquita Black and Toni Harris tied for first in high jump (4-2) to register the lone individual event win for the Lady Panthers. Lady Trojans survive York comeback, post 4-3 victory
New Kent’s Lady Trojans built a 4-0 first half lead and then held off a late second half York surge to upset the visiting Falcons 4-3 in Bay Rivers District soccer. The hosts owned their 4-0 advantage with just under six minutes left in the opening half, but the Falcons scored just before the break and added two quick goals over a two-minute span in the game’s waning moments. Logan charges dropped in CC
Charles City charges lodged against Alonzo Erwin Logan, the notorious escape artist who twice prompted police manhunts in the county, have been dropped. A motion by county Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler to drop kidnapping and burglary charges was granted yesterday (Tuesday) in Charles City Circuit Court. Logan, 41, had been indicted in January on both counts that stemmed from his latest escape last Nov. 15 from Dillwyn Correctional Center in Buckingham County.
