NK, Bruton deadlock at 1-1

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:49 am

A late second half goal enabled Bruton’s Panthers to overtake New Kent’s host Lady Trojans at 1-1. The teams then played to a standoff in two overtime periods to settle for a Bay Rivers District soccer tie. Despite the outcome, New Kent remains on track for the school’s first ever post-season district tournament appearance. For now, the Lady Trojans are holding sixth place in the district standings at 2-4-1. They are 4-6-1 in all games. “We took control and sat on a 1-0 lead and that’s hard to do in soccer,” Lady Trojan coach Chad Honeycutt said. “One is never…

Poquoson 12 NK 0 (baseball)

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:48 am

On the mound, Poquoson lefthander Kyle Crockett befuddled New Kent’s batters. The host Trojans managed just one hit off Crockett in four innings as the Islanders cruised to a 12-0 Bay Rivers District decision in five innings last Wednesday. “[Crockett’s] a good pitcher. He throws strikes and hits his spots,” Trojan coach Ronnie Cox said. “We didn’t underestimate him. We knew he’d pitch well.” Mitchell Baker became the only Trojan to touch Crockett, jumping on the Islander hurler’s first pitch with two away in the second inning for a line drive single into center field. Baker stole second but was…

Six-run burst lifts NK, 7-3

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:46 am

A six-run burst in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 deadlock, propelling New Kent’s Lady Trojans past Poquoson’s visiting Islanders 7-3 in a crucial Bay Rivers’ District softball encounter last Wednesday. The victory not only avenged a 3-0, no-hit shutout last month at the hands of the Islanders, but also maintained at least a half-game lead in the district standings for the first place Lady Trojans. The outcome marked New Kent’s seventh win in a row as the team improved to 12-3. Poquoson took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Shannon Rollins singled and scored on Amy Putnam’s…

Lady Trojans survive York comeback, post 4-3 victory

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:45 am

New Kent’s Lady Trojans built a 4-0 first half lead and then held off a late second half York surge to upset the visiting Falcons 4-3 in Bay Rivers District soccer. The hosts owned their 4-0 advantage with just under six minutes left in the opening half, but the Falcons scored just before the break and added two quick goals over a two-minute span in the game’s waning moments. The Falcons dominated in the second half, firing eight shots on goal to New Kent’s three. “That was the longest 40 minutes of my life,” New Kent coach Chad Honeycutt said…

Hammill single lifts NK, 9-8

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:43 am

Bat in hand, Al Hammill approached the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and two away. Back in the seventh, he faced a similar situation with the game-winning run poised at third, but struck out to send New Kent’s Bay Rivers District baseball showdown with Lafayette’s invading Rams into extra innings. To say his previous trip to the plate weighed heavily on his mind would have been an understatement. “I was thinking definitely don’t do what I did the last time,” the Trojans’ first baseman said. He didn’t. With one swing of the bat,…

Fleming walk-off single caps New Kent rally

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:42 am

With one away in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, York’s Falcons appeared headed for their second straight 1-0 softball victory over New Kent’s Lady Trojans. But timely hitting and heads-up base running combined with Falcon mistakes led to York’s undoing. Tyler Fleming’s two-run walk-off single capped a stunning comeback, lifting New Kent to a 2-1 triumph and into a tie for first place at 11-3 in the Bay Rivers District standings. Fleming’s game-winning hit sailed just over the outstretched glove of Falcon second baseman Amanda Lucker scoring Rachel Baldwin from third and pinch runner Dana Tompkins from…

By Alan Chamberlain | May 7, 2008 9:39 am

Charles City charges lodged against Alonzo Erwin Logan, the notorious escape artist who twice prompted police manhunts in the county, have been dropped. A motion by county Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler to drop kidnapping and burglary charges was granted yesterday (Tuesday) in Charles City Circuit Court. Thus ended a 35-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, the last 23 as Lanexa’s postmaster. “It’s going to be a little different not seeing everyone like I usually do,” he said while sitting in his office the day before reflecting on his work in the New Kent County community. “I’ve been here since 1985. It’s been a long time, but it doesn’t seem like it,” he added. “When you stay in the same place, you get to know everyone, see families grow…

State-of-the-art technology coming in under budget

By Community Member | May 7, 2008 9:33 am

New Kent School Board members are praising efforts by administrators who negotiated lower than anticipated costs for furniture and technology packages bound for the county’s new high school. Best of all, when the building opens in September classrooms inside the $50 million structure will feature “high-end” technology as opposed to the more “affordable” packages school officials had expected to purchase. “There’s no question in my mind we’ll be presenting you in August with a 21st century, pretty close to top of the line high school,” associate superintendent Rick Richardson told board members during their Monday night meeting. Richardson, who along…
