Drug raids net six arrests in NK, two fugitives sought

By Alan Chamberlain | December 3, 2008 12:55 pm

Law enforcement personnel kicked in doors and made drug trafficking arrests in Charles City County on Nov. 13. Just over a week later, the same scenario played out in neighboring New Kent County. Early morning raids took place on Nov. 21 at three New Kent residences, courtesy of the New Kent Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team. Operation Close Ties, dubbed the second phase of an eight-month effort to cripple the area’s drug trade, netted six arrests out of eight suspects indicted a few days earlier by a New Kent Circuit Court Grand Jury. Two of the suspects remain at large….

New Kent JV football team unbeaten at 9-0

By Community Member | December 2, 2008 11:53 am

New Kent’s JV football team has just completed an outstanding season, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record. The team was composed of 38 players with an equal split between freshmen and sophomores. New Kent outscored its opponents 258-40. The JV Trojans were primarily a running team, averaging more than 250 yards per game on the ground. The offensive line did a great job of opening holes for a talented group of runners. Coach Mike Faus did a nice job of calling plays for the offense. The JV Trojans were awesome on defense, shutting out five opponents and limiting the other…

Author’s book aims at closing genealogy gap in New Kent

By Community Member | December 2, 2008 11:52 am

A local history enthusiast’s recently published book could be the answer researchers are looking for when it comes to tracing the history and lineage of families with roots in New Kent County. Sandston resident Dallas Oslin’s 178-page work, “New Kent County in 1863: Land Geography, Landowners, Estate Names, Plantations, Acreage, and Others” is now on sale. The retired Richmond city planner said last week that he has 545 copies ready and waiting in his living room. “There is beaucoup data here if anybody is interested in doing genealogical work on anybody in New Kent County,” he said. “New Kent, being…

Citizens group requesting town hall meetings in NK

By Alan Chamberlain | December 2, 2008 11:51 am

A New Kent citizens group is urging the county’s Board of Supervisors to adopt a resolution that would enact quarterly town hall meetings during which residents could discuss issues with county officials. Members of the New Kent County Citizens Coalition voiced their proposal during the public comment session at last Wednesday’s board meeting. Supervisors, however, neither discussed nor took action on the request. The coalition is the same group that filed suit in county circuit court in July seeking to overturn New Kent’s recent real estate reassessment. Ultimately, the suit was tossed out after the judge in the matter ruled…

NK grand jury indicts six

By Alan Chamberlain | December 2, 2008 11:50 am

Six individuals, including a New Kent woman accused of raping and sexually abusing an underage boy and a man accused of robbing a county convenience store, have been indicted by a county circuit court grand jury. Convening Monday, the grand jury indicted Elisabeth Jane Norman, of 5021 Holly Road in Quinton, on one count of rape and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. The charges stem from an Aug. 2 incident in which Norman allegedly had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old boy. The indictment in the matter alleges that the act was “accomplished by the victim’s mental…

Nobel Prize winner praises new observatory in NK

By Community Member | December 2, 2008 11:49 am

More than likely, Dr. John Mather was tickled to receive a share of the 2006 Nobel Prize for physics. For certain, he was tickled to take part in the dedication ceremony for the Brinton Observatory on the grounds of Makemie Woods Camp and Conference Center. He said so. Mather delivered the keynote address at last Friday’s event at the Presbyterian church-run camp near Barhamsville in eastern New Kent County. A steady rain forced the ceremony indoors, away from the observatory and its sensitive telescope mechanism that would fare poorly if allowed to become wet. But the weather failed to dampen…

Local fishermen unhappy as herring moratorium looms

By Community Member | December 2, 2008 11:47 am

Local fishermen are far from convinced that it is not too late to head off a possible statewide moratorium on fishing for migratory river herring. That sentiment appeared evident Monday night as fishermen gathered in the Charles City County government building for a public hearing on the future of herring fishing. Fishermen remain wary, despite assurances from Virginia Marine Resources Commission officials and representatives from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the organization that regulates herring fishing in 15 Atlantic Coast states. Monday’s hearing, hosted by the VMRC, was the lone live public comment session being held in Virginia. Hearings…

Arrests number 17, charges 65 in latest CC drug sweep

By Alan Chamberlain | December 2, 2008 11:41 am

Law enforcement personnel from the Twin Rivers Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force paid visits to several Charles City residences last Thursday as part of Operation Happy Holidays. Officers, however, neither delivered gifts nor offered well wishes for the holiday season. Instead, they came bearing search and arrest warrants plus indictments. Authorities rounded up 16 suspects as part of the latest crackdown on the area’s crack cocaine trade. A 17th suspect was arrested early Sunday. In all, 65 charges, mostly for distribution and conspiracy to distribute crack, have been filed. Investigators look upon the effort as their Christmas present to the community….
