Fleming walk-off single caps New Kent rally
With one away in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, York’s Falcons appeared headed for their second straight 1-0 softball victory over New Kent’s Lady Trojans. But timely hitting and heads-up base running combined with Falcon mistakes led to York’s undoing. Logan charges dropped in CC
Charles City charges lodged against Alonzo Erwin Logan, the notorious escape artist who twice prompted police manhunts in the county, have been dropped. A motion by county Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler to drop kidnapping and burglary charges was granted yesterday (Tuesday) in Charles City Circuit Court. Logan, 41, had been indicted in January on both counts that stemmed from his latest escape last Nov. 15 from Dillwyn Correctional Center in Buckingham County. Lanexa postmaster retires after 23 years in New Kent
Bryan Perkinson spent his last day on Friday behind the customer service counter at Lanexa Post Office. Thus ended a 35-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, the last 23 as Lanexa’s postmaster. “It’s going to be a little different not seeing everyone like I usually do,” he said while sitting in his office the day before reflecting on his work in the New Kent County community. “I’ve been here since 1985. Suspect sought in bizarre attempted robbery in NK
Sheriff’s personnel in New Kent are searching for the suspect who attempted to pull off an unusual armed robbery at a county business, but fled the scene before being handed cash. The suspect, described as a white male in his early twenties, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 in height with blond hair and wear a red hooded jacket and khaki cargo pants, entered the Movie Gallery store at 2605 New Kent Highway in Quinton around 4:30 p.m. on April 30. State-of-the-art technology coming in under budget
New Kent School Board members are praising efforts by administrators who negotiated lower than anticipated costs for furniture and technology packages bound for the county’s new high school. NK can get by with 73-cent tax rate, administrator says
New Kent Board of Supervisors members could be looking at lowering the county’s proposed real estate tax rate for next year to 73 cents. But there is some discussion in the works about providing additional money support for county schools. During an April 14 budget work session, supervisors decided to advertise for public hearing a 75 cents per $100 of assessed value real estate tax rate for the 2008-09 fiscal year that begins July 1. Sex offenses dropped, but replaced by firearm counts
Fifteen sex offense counts involving two young girls and lodged against a Charles City County man have been dropped. But Forrest Everett “Skeeter” Evans now faces 10 firearm charges that, if convicted, could place him behind bars for the rest of his life. A motion filed by Charles City Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Tyler to drop the sex charges — 10 counts of aggravated sexual battery and five counts of forcible sodomy — was granted yesterday (Tuesday) by county circuit court Judge Thomas B. Seven CC teaching jobs face elimination in budget crunch
Charles City school officials are faced with eliminating seven teaching positions and four other jobs to balance its $13 million budget for the next school year. And county School Board members are far from happy about the prospect. Board members learned of the schools’ predicament during a work session last Thursday night. Becca Mills tossed a two-hitter and New Kent’s offense gradually pulled away as the host Lady Trojans blanked Lafayette’s visiting Rams 5-0.
