Hunters descend on CC board

By Alan Chamberlain | January 30, 2008 11:42 am

A crowd of more than 200, mostly hunters, filled the Charles City government building’s auditorium for last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting. But the throng did not show up in response to a potential overturning of the county’s law allowing high-powered rifles during deer hunting season. These were hunters out to protect their right to use dogs. In essence, the hunters pressed supervisors to pass a resolution aimed at preserving their right to hunt deer utilizing dogs. And supervisors were quick to oblige, unanimously passing the resolution during their Jan. 22 meeting. County resident Jimmy Fitzgerald spearheaded the effort in…

Providence Forge preschool earns award for excellence

By Alan Chamberlain | January 30, 2008 11:41 am

Since 1975, Sunshine Nursery School has operated within Providence Forge Presbyterian Church. The preschool for three- and four-year-olds has gone on relatively unnoticed outside of the New Kent-Charles City area. That is, until now. Church officials learned in mid-January their nursery school has drawn national acclaim by winning the Sarah Hill Brown Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. The award is one of five presented annually by Richmond-based Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education. All Presbyterian churches in the United States are eligible. Providence Forge is sharing its award — named after the late educator Sarah…

By Alan Chamberlain | January 30, 2008 11:39 am

A new home for Heritage Public Library has been found in New Kent, and location for a Charles City branch is down to a pair of possibilities. But don’t expect library services in both counties to be renewed just yet. In New Kent, a library branch will be located in the New Kent Commons development on Route 155 across from the entrance to Colonial Downs and Brickshire. Plans call for the library to move into office space recently vacated by Coldwell Banker (6215-D Chesapeake Circle). The library’s Board of Trustees is executing a three-year lease for the site. In Charles…

Early deficit dooms Panthers

By Alan Chamberlain | January 16, 2008 11:34 am

Less than three minutes into their non-district basketball clash with West Point’s invading Pointers, Charles City’s Panthers found themselves trailing by 10 points. It was a deficit from which the hosts never fully recovered. West Point turned back every Charles City comeback attempt on the way to a 74-60 triumph. The Jan. 2 outcome lowered the Panthers’ record to 2-5. “We’re a very young team and it takes too long for us to get started,” said Charles City head coach Brenner Carter. “The kids have to learn that from the time the ball is tossed up, we’ve got to be…

Grafton used a 27-11 second quarter to overcome a New Kent lead and forge on to a 62-49 Bay Rivers District win. The Jan. 3 result dropped New Kent to 1-6 in the district and 1-8 overall. “That second quarter was the quarter,” Lady Trojan coach Gierek Walker said afterward. “They got up to 17 points ahead of us and we outscored them for the rest of the game….

By Alan Chamberlain | January 16, 2008 11:31 am

New Kent’s Trojans unleashed their customary pressure defense combined with three-point shooting formula that had worked for an unbeaten record at home so far this season. But Jamestown’s visiting Eagles were not impressed. The Eagles used depth along with ability to break New Kent’s press for easy shots to gain an 81-64 Bay Rivers District basketball win last Friday, handing the Trojans their first home loss. Afterward, New Kent coach Ed Allen identified a number of facets that led to the downfall as his team fell to 7-3 in the district and 9-3 overall. “Shot selection, inability to run our…

By Alan Chamberlain | January 16, 2008 11:30 am

Sam Craig’s sudden reversal and pin of Varina’s Poncho Lyles in the 140-pound match enabled host New Kent to forge in front of the visiting Blue Devils. New Kent then went on to win six of the final seven matches to defeat the Group AAA Blue Devils 54-22 in non-district wrestling. Craig fought back from a 6-1 scoring deficit as Lyles had dominated during the match. Craig managed the pin at the 3:18 mark to put New Kent in front 18-16 in team points. New Kent then picked up four forfeits in the Jan. 8 encounter with wins going to…
