A final inning rally by Charles City’s Lady Panthers fell one run short as West Point’s host Pointers held on for a 12-11 win in the first game of a March 24 non-district softball doubleheader. The Pointers went on to take the second game 12-3.

The Lady Panthers staged a pair of comebacks in game one, the first after falling behind 7-1 in the second inning. Charles City scored twice in the third. West Point answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame before a six-run explosion in the fourth pulled the visitors within one at 10-9.

The Pointers, however, created a little breathing room with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and owned a 12-9 lead heading into the fifth and final frame.

Charles City got runners on second (Melinda Childress) and third (Jasmine Binford) with one away. Binford raced home on Stefanie Burch’s ground out to cut the gap to 12-10. The next batter, Ashton Montez, drilled a single into left field to drive in Childress making the contest a one-run game.

An error on Amanda Adkins’ grounder to short and no play on Shana Brown’s slow dribbler down the first base line loaded the bases, but Logan Madison’s ground ball resulted in a force out at second to end the game.

In game two, Charles City took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first, but West Point moved in front 3-1 in the bottom of the frame. The visitors overtook their hosts with two runs in the second, but the Pointers scored nine runs over the next two frames to put the contest out of reach. The game was halted after four innings due to cold weather.

Charles City’s Panthers managed just two hits per game off West Point pitching as the host Pointers swept a non-district baseball doubleheader in shutout fashion, 11-0 and 9-0.

In the first game, Panther pitcher Roger Williams led off the game with a single and advanced to third base, but was unable to score. Devin Holmes singled for the visitors with two away in the second and was stranded on base.

West Point, meanwhile, took the lead for good on Kyle Davis’ RBI single in the first. Jamie Teagle’s sacrifice fly delivered another run for a 2-0 advantage.

The hosts then got to Williams in the second with a four-run barrage started by Ryan Wilson’s RBI double down the left field line.

In the second game, Panther pitcher Jonathan Abbott held the Pointers in check until the fourth inning when an error on a ground ball stroked by Craig Carter produced a pair of runs. The hosts pulled away from there.

The two losses dropped Charles City to 0-3.
