Development sparked in NK

Since the economy turned south late last year, new development projects in New Kent County have been on hold. But indications are things are about to change. Plans are now before the county to upgrade a country inn and spa slated for the New Kent Vineyards development. Then there is a rezoning application designed to pave the way for 111 single-family houses in a new subdivision in the county’s western end. And finally, the group that proposed building a landfill in the county is seeking industrial zoning on just over 1,187 acres along Interstate 64. Public hearings on all three…

Lady Trojans prevail in track

New Kent’s Lady Trojans amassed 150 points to outdistance five opponents on their home track on April 1. Peninsula Catholic placed second with 76 points while Charles City took third with 69. St. Gertrude’s finished fourth with 68 followed by Hampton Roads Academy (65) and Surry (42). New Kent won eight events while Charles City prevailed in three. Five-run third inning propels Lady Trojans past Jamestown

Erupting for five runs in the third inning, New Kent’s Lady Trojans distanced themselves from Jamestown’s visiting Eagles. The hosts then rode the three-hit pitching of Ashley McMichael to a 6-0 Bay Rivers District softball triumph. The April 2 outcome upped New Kent’s record to 4-3 in the district while Jamestown dipped to 1-7. “Today we finally broke out. Windsor tops Charles City

Charles City’s Panthers managed to get only three runners on base against Windsor pitching as the visiting Dukes stopped the hosts on a no-hitter in Tri-Rivers District baseball last Friday. Windsor’s offense, meanwhile, used a six-run third inning to break open a close contest on the way to an 11-0 win in five innings, dropping Charles City to 0-2 in the district and 0-7 for the season thus far. “Mentally, we just weren’t here to play,” said Panther coach Irving Bradby. “We couldn’t put two and two together, but we’ll be just fine. Late Essex goals foil NK bid

Three late second half goals by Essex attackers broke open a close soccer battle with New Kent’s host Trojans, lifting the visiting Group A Trojans from the Northern Neck District to a 5-2 win. New Kent owned the first half, taking a 1-0 halftime lead, but Essex moved in front early after the break and broke a 2-2 deadlock with three unanswered scores in the final minutes. Charles City’s Lady Panthers took the lead behind a five-run sixth inning and worked out of a bases loaded, no outs jam in the seventh and final frame to outlast Franklin’s invading Broncos 14-12 in Tri-Rivers District softball. Last Wednesday’s triumph handed the hosts a 1-0 district record plus their first win of the season. Overall, Charles City improved to 1-2. The Lady Panthers pounded out 11 hits and got the shutdown defense when they needed it in the late innings. Farm Bureau group donates ‘Learning Barn’ to CCES

Charles City-James City-New Kent-York Farm Bureau Women’s Committee has donated a “Learning Barn,” designed to enhance students’ knowledge of agriculture, to Charles City Elementary School. Taking part in the March 23 presentation were Farm Bureau president Norman Hofmeyer, vice-president Jackson Darst, Capital District chairman Ruby Leonard, and Women’s Committee members Gloria Beil and Dottie Hofmeyer. Accepting on behalf of the school were superintendent Janet Crawley, principal Danielle Belton, and librarian Diane Carver. A Learning Barn is a bookshelf shaped and painted to look like a barn.
