By Alan Chamberlain | January 7, 2010 3:09 pm

A defendant labeled as the muscle in a botched robbery attempt last April outside a New Kent County restaurant must serve the next seven years behind bars. Charles Frederick Kirby, 28, of 3839 Poverty Hall Road, Quinton, cooperated with authorities starting immediately after being apprehended for the April 11 crime, and Judge Thomas B. Hoover took that into consideration before imposing sentence. “If you had not testified, I would impose at least 10 and more like 15 years in prison,” the judge told Kirby during sentencing on Dec. 21 in New Kent Circuit Court. Hoover handed Kirby 10 years each…

Manslaughter charge tossed

By Alan Chamberlain | January 7, 2010 3:06 pm

A charge of alcohol-related involuntary manslaughter lodged against a Charlottesville woman in connection with a fatal accident last June on Interstate 64 in New Kent has been dismissed in county circuit court. Judge Thomas B. Hoover tossed out the charge against Sara Ethridge Klingel, 27, following a Dec. 21 trial, ruling that the prosecution had not proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Last June 13 around 3 a.m., Klingel was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Montero that suddenly swerved out of the passing lane near the 223-mile marker on westbound I-64, crossed the travel lane, and struck a…

By Alan Chamberlain | January 7, 2010 3:05 pm

Charles City school officials have unveiled a list of 16 capital improvement projects totaling almost $10 million and spread over the next three years. County School board members opted during their Dec. 15 meeting to pass along the proposed schedule for scrutiny by county Planning Commission members. How many of the projects come to fruition and when depends on funding availability, and Charles City, like other state school systems, faces a less than rosy budget picture for the next fiscal year (2010-11). Five projects, totaling close to $2.3 million, are placed for now in the next fiscal year. Topping the…

A two-year Peace Corps assignment in Jamaica enabled New Kent County resident Mike Henrich to not only help his fellow man but also stimulate his creativity in the realm of poetry. People and places in the Caribbean island nation are the subjects of a collaborative book effort matching the retired New Kent High School teacher’s poetry with photographs taken by a fellow Peace Corps volunteer. “Wood and Water” is an 80-page collection of Henrich poems and accompanying photos snapped by William Pace, a graduate student from the Baltimore, Md. area. But don’t look for their work in bookstores. The book…

By Alan Chamberlain | January 7, 2010 2:57 pm

New Kent Farms developers insist their massive housing and commercial project under construction in the center of New Kent County is not threatened with serious problems brought on by the ongoing recession. Nevertheless, they are seeking revisions in the Farms of New Kent Planned Unit Development (PUD) ordinance that governs the development. The changes, they say, are necessary so that New Kent Farms can remain competitive in a troubled housing market. Build-out for the development, pegged at 15 years when the ordinance was approved in 2005, has now been pushed back to 2022. The list of revisions comes before the…
