New Kent edges Lafayette in boys’ track

New Kent’s boys won nine events and amassed 147 points to edge Lafayette (139) in their track and field season opener.

Five Group A teams competed in the March 17 meet at New Kent. Charles City scored 55 points followed by Middlesex (46), Mathews (29), Essex (27), and King William (12).

Cory Dunn and Ryan Coles emerged as double individual event winners for the hosts. Dunn won the 200 meters (22.78) and long jump (21-0) while Coles prevailed in shot (43-1½) and discus (129-10½).

Other New Kent individual winners were Desmond Worelds at 100 meters (11.21), Austin Smith in the 400 (51.68), Michael Lull in the 1600 (4:44.77), and Charles Parsons in pole vault (11-0). New Kent’s 4×100 meter relay team won in 44.54.

Brian Wyatt posted Charles City’s lone individual win, claiming the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 45.34.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Trojans scored 86 points to finish second overall behind Lafayette (132). King William (66) edged Charles City (60) for third place while trailing were Essex (42), Mathews (40), and Middlesex (35).

Posting individual wins for New Kent were Holly Sheffield in the 1600 (5:43.54), Tyler Savage at 800 meters (2:35.33), and Jalesa Johnson in long jump (15-9).
