Four defendants are serving sentences following recent felony convictions in Charles City Circuit Court. All four were sentenced on April 2.

Ronnie Sylvester Mabry, 23, of 7641 Ruthville Road in Charles City, has been handed an active term of one year in prison under terms of a plea deal stemming from two counts of credit card theft.

Between last Oct. 10 and Nov. 1, Mabry stole two credit cards from a county woman and used the cards on several occasions at stores in neighboring localities, prosecutor Rob Tyler told the court.

Tyler identified Mabry as the boyfriend of the woman’s babysitter, and said the cards turned up missing around the time the babysitter was employed. Tyler said Mabry admitted taking the cards from the woman’s purse.

A plea deal dropped one count in turn for Mabry’s guilty plea on the other. Judge Thomas B. Hoover followed terms of the plea deal in sentencing Mabry to 10 years in prison with nine suspended for the next 10 years.

Vincent Lee Brown, 35, of 16410 John Tyler Memorial Highway in Charles City, pleaded guilty under terms of a plea deal to one count of cocaine possession.

Tyler said Brown appeared at Crewe’s Place last Sept. 6 after being ordered earlier to stay off the property. A county deputy searched Brown and found a small cocaine rock on his person. Hoover sentenced Brown to five years in prison with all but 45 days suspended.

Keith Lamont Bagby, 47, of the 4600 block of Darbytown Road in Henrico, must successfully complete the state Department of Corrections’ detention and diversion programs as part of his sentence following convictions for burglary and grand larceny.

Last Nov. 17, county deputies caught Bagby and another man in the act of breaking into a house on CC Road after a witness alerted the sheriff’s office. Tyler labeled the defendant as “not a very productive guy,” and Hoover pointed to Bagby’s six previous felony convictions, including arrest just 16 days after being released from jail on another charge.

Hoover sentenced Bagby to 20 years in prison on both counts, suspending all but six months for the next 20 years. The defendant has already spent five months in jail and was given credit for time served. Completing the detention and diversion programs takes about a year.

Christopher Allen Shumway, 41, of 735 Rte. 113 in West Fairlee, Vt., pleaded guilty to one count of grand theft auto. On Feb. 3, he stole a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner from a residence in Charles City’s eastern end. The vehicle was unlocked and the keys were left inside.

Shumway and the vehicle were found the next day in Sussex County after the defendant got the vehicle stuck in mud. Tyler said Shumway admitted stealing the Toyota and added he was on his way to Florida. Hoover sentenced the defendant to 20 years in prison, suspending all but one year, six months for the next 20 years.
