New Kent track teams ease past three private schools

New Kent’s boys captured first in 14 of 17 events while the Lady Trojans won 11 as both track teams cruised past a trio of private schools.

The Trojan boys piled up 136 points in the March 31 meet to easily outdistance second place Benedictine’s 60¾. Peninsula Catholic scored 31¼ followed by Hampton Roads Academy’s 26. The Lady Trojans, meanwhile, won by an even wider margin, totaling 126 points to PC’s 38 and 33 each for St. Gertrude’s and HRA.

For the boys, Ryan Coles emerged as a double individual event winner, taking the shot (45-5½) and discus (122-11). Posting single event wins were Desmond Worelds (100 meters, 11.33), Cory Dunn (200, 23.02), Austin Smith (400, 50.45), Michael Lull (1600, 4:47.75), Paul Kearney (110 hurdles, 15.43), Matt Fultz (300 intermediates, 42.21), Charles Parsons (pole vault, 12-9), Kody Simmons (long jump, 20-9½), and Ethan Fowlkes (triple jump, 38-81/2). All three Trojans relay teams prevailed.

On the girls’ side, Jalesa Johnson won the high jump (4-6) and shot (29-5½). Also posting wins were Brittney Byrd (100, 13.46), Tyler Savage (800, 2:40.02), Holly Sheffield (3200, 12:38.76), Danielle Holzhauser (300 intermediates, 56.12), Arica Fowler (pole vault, 8-3), Krystal Jones (triple jump, 30-6½), and Kandra Taylor (discus, 77-5½). The Lady Trojan 4×100 and 4×800 relay teams also won.
