Tabb blanks New Kent 10-0

New Kent’s Trojans knew they faced one of the best teams in Bay Rivers District soccer in taking on Tabb’s invading Tigers. And it didn’t take long for the visitors to prove it.

One minute into the April 1 contest, the Tigers punched in a goal to take the lead for good. Five more goals would follow in the first half alone, including three resulting from designed plays off direct and indirect free kicks.

More of the same followed after the break. In the end, Tabb claimed a 10-0 victory with the match halted midway through the second half on the district’s slaughter rule.

“We never got close to being in the game,” said Trojan coach Clinton Leckie. “We didn’t work and didn’t put pressure on them, but they were doing it to us and it worked.”

Leckie tried to inspire his team at halftime, but he said his players remained in awe of the Tigers.

“I said, ‘Let’s go out there guys and get a goal and win the second half,’” he said. “But that didn’t last long.”

Fifteen seconds into the second half, the Tigers scored their seventh goal.

New Kent got off only one first half shot, that coming on a direct free kick. For the game, the hosts’ shots totaled just four. Trojan keeper Dylan Coons registered four saves.
