Lady Trojans dominate 8-0
Cashing in on frequent open scoring opportunities, New Kent’s Lady Trojans pulled away from Washington & Lee’s visiting Eagles for an 8-0 soccer triumph.
The April 30 match, that ended 12 minutes short of regulation on a slaughter rule, raised New Kent’s record above the .500 mark to 5-4-1.
“We’ve played so many tight games, it’s good to change things up and give other people some playing time,” said New Kent coach Chad Honeycutt. “We started off a little slow tonight, but we finished very well.”
Lady Trojan Anna Black reversed the hosts’ sluggish start at the first half’s 24-minute mark. She dribbled past W&L defenders to beat Eagle keeper Brianna Roane with shot into the left corner of the goal.
Just over a minute later, Abbie McIninch drilled the first of her two goals on the night after driving past the W&L defense. Asia Hosey continued the onslaught at the 16-minute mark, blasting a shot from the right side and off Roane’s hand into the net.
A minute later, McIninch added her second goal, and Ashley Pierce scored on a breakaway with two minutes left to up New Kent’s halftime advantage to 5-0.
Five minutes into the second half, Vera Lessa’s penalty kick opened a 6-0 lead. Then, Lady Trojan keeper Casey Spencer got into the scoring act, racing out of goal to launch a direct free kick from just inside the midfield stripe and over Roane to make it 7-0. Katie Kirkpatrick closed out the contest on a breakaway shot with 18 minutes left.
“It’s good for the program to have a game where you can open up,” Honeycutt said. “It’s an opportunity to get everyone out there and blow off some steam.”
