Charles City’s Lady Panther softball team is flirting with a winning record and is closing out its most successful season in recent memory. But Windsor’s invading Dukes weren’t impressed during a May 13 Tri-Rivers District encounter.

Windsor jumped on the hosts for 10 first inning runs and never looked back in gaining a 16-0 win. The outcome evened Charles City’s record at 3-3 in the district and 5-5 overall.

The Lady Panthers had little success in overcoming the early deficit thanks to Duke hurler Tiffany Rapp who struck out nine.

The hosts were unable to mount a serious scoring threat until the fifth and final inning when Rapp walked Amanda Adkins and gave up back-to-back singles to Aundrea Baker and Jasmine Binford to load the bases with two away. Rapp, however, preserved the shutout, striking out Mindy Childress to end the game.

In baseball and for the second straight home game, the Panthers were stymied by left-handed pitching as the Dukes also posted a 16-0 win.

Windsor’s Brett Vaughan scattered three hits in four innings of work while his teammates built a comfortable 9-0 lead. The Dukes moved in front 2-0 in the first on Chris Horne’s two-run double down the third base line. The visitors then added a run in the third before pushing across four more in the fourth.

Charles City had opportunities to cut into the Dukes’ early lead. Carl New and Dustin Holmes singled in the Panther second, but Vaughan got out of the jam. Then in the third, Evan Adkins reached base on a throwing error and Luke Martin walked to put two aboard with no outs, but Vaughan retired the next three batters. New also singled in the fourth inning but was stranded at first.

Windsor put the game away with a seven-run sixth frame, dropping Charles City to 0-6 in the district and 1-10 overall.
