Panthers first in T-RD

Charles City’s Panthers got double individual event wins from Trevor Jones and Cruz Adkins on the way to capturing the boys’ championship in the Tri-Rivers District track and field meet.

The host Panthers scored 146 points at the May 18 meet to finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Windsor (118). Franklin totaled 80 followed by Sussex (68), Surry (40), and Chesterfield Community (10).

Jones won the high jump (6-0) and long jump (20-5) while Adkins prevailed at 1600 and 3200 meters, posting respective times of 5:18.31 and 12:04.62. Brian Wyatt, meanwhile, won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (43.51). Jones and Wyatt then teamed with Tevin Adkins and Kevin Wallace to win the 4×100 meter relay in 45.18.

On the girls’ side, Charles City’s Lady Panthers received double individual victories from Kierra Brooks who sprinted past the field in 12.71 to claim the 100 meters and returned for a 27.21 finish to win the 200 meters.

The Lady Panthers scored 88.5 points to place third overall, a half-point behind runner-up Surry (89). Windsor won the meet with 175.5.

The top six finishers in each individual event and top three relay teams advanced to today’s Region A meet at West Point. Jones (high jump), Brooks (100 meters), and Charles City’s 4×100 relay team qualified for the state Group A meet set for June 5 at Radford University.
