Trojans dominate BRD

New Kent’s Trojans won six events on the way to a lopsided victory in the Bay River District boys’ track and field meet.

The Trojans amassed 165 points in last Thursday’s meet at York High to far outdistance runner-up Grafton’s 81. The combined point total of Grafton and third place finisher Jamestown (80) fell short of equaling the Trojans’ output.

“I’m a little bit surprised,” said New Kent coach Mont Linkenauger. “I thought it would be closer. I didn’t think we’d win it this big.”

The Trojans built a comfortable lead in the field category, taking first in three of six events. Adam Otey cleared 6-6 to set a new school record in high jump while Ryan Coles won shot (45-2) and Cory Dunn prevailed in long jump (21-1¼).

Dunn emerged as a double individual event winner, sprinting to the finish line in 22.21 to capture the 200 meters. Desmond Worelds, meanwhile, beat the field at 100 meters, winning in 11.15. Dunn and Worelds teamed with Justin Williams and Cody Simmons to win the 4×100 meter relay in 43.16.

New Kent’s Lady Trojans finished eighth overall in the girls’ meet with 39 points. Arica Fowler’s second place in pole vault (8-0) was the team’s best finish. Lafayette easily won the meet with 106.

The top six finishers in each individual event and top three teams in each relay advanced to today’s Region I meet at York.
