A group of 25 volunteers flexed their muscles and endured the heat to mulch and plant native plants, maintain and mark hunter access trails, and install wood duck boxes on Morris Creek during a “Friends of the Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area” (WMA) kick-off event on June 12 in Charles City.

The volunteers are part of a new Friends group that will work with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to improve wildlife habitat. Volunteers invested 132 hours of work.

Volunteers included members of the VDGIF Complementary WorkForce Program, the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program, the Young Bucks Hunt Club, and the Virginia Waterfowler’s Association. They were provided with a lunch cookout hosted by VDGIF personnel.

The Friends of the Chickahominy WMA group encourages local support and citizen involvement in management activities at the Chickahominy WMA. Anyone interested in learning more about or participating in upcoming volunteer activities can contact Glen Askins in the Region 1 Office at (804) 829-6580 or Ray Philbates at (757) 880-1111. Volunteers are needed to assist with organizing future workdays at the Chickahominy WMA.
