Abrams wins New Kent Senior Idol competition

Louis Abrams, who resides in the Cumberland District, captured the title in the New Kent County Senior Idol competition held Aug. 28 at George W. Watkins Elementary School.

Abrams’ rendition of “I Want Jesus to Walk With Me” got the audience and judges clapping and brought one judge to her feet.

Rose Williams captured the runner-up spot. Abrams received a $100 cash prize while Williams took home $50.

Other contestants were Cappy Christian, Madeline McCrae, Enon Bassett, and Lillian Gardner.

Judges were Joyce Bassett, who was a music teacher in the New Kent County public school system from 1974-94, and Sharon Whitman, who is the current chorale director at New Kent High School.

The event was sponsored by the George W. Watkins Alumni and Scholastic Association and co-sponsored by Senior Connections-The Capital Area Agency on Aging.
