Pouring rain and a power outage failed to stop last Thursday’s private tour of the new Chickahominy Family Physicians’ 15,000 square-foot New Kent Medical Center.

Located at 1850 Pocahontas Trail (Route 60) in the Bottoms Bridge area of Quinton, the center opens to patients on Oct. 18.

Dr. Dennis Thomas, one of the center’s partners, told the invitation-only crowd that the new building has been 12 years in the making.

“We think of this as a one-stop medical care facility,” he added. “The people of New Kent are such great people, and we think they deserve the best in medical care.”

“It cost more, but we didn’t compromise on quality,” chimed in Dr. Anup Gokli, another of the center’s partners.

Retired Dr. Farrar W. Howard Sr., the original partner in Chickahominy Family Practices, cut the ceremonial ribbon for the occasion. He began treating patients in the New Kent-Charles City area in 1954.

Assisting in the ceremony were Chickahominy Chief Stephen Adkins and several tribe members. The medical center is located near the site where a Chickahominy village occupied by the legendary Chief Powhatan once stood.

The two-story facility features 16 offices and examining rooms of the ground floor while upstairs is the business office and a 40-seat conference room.

“We’ll use the conference room for patient education and group meetings, and open its use to community groups,” Gokli said.

Also, upstairs space is being rented by Bon Secours and Virginia Eye Institute. Bon Secours plans to offer specialist services on site including gastroenterology, orthopedics, cardiology, and general surgery.

The new center replaces the Kentwood Medical facility located in the Kentwood Square Shopping Center on Route 249 in Quinton.

Satellite offices on Route 249 in the Maidstone development at New Kent Courthouse and on Route 60 in Providence Forge will remain in operation.
