Lady Trojans denied BRD tourney berth

For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, the task ahead seemed simple — win and get in to the Bay Rivers District field hockey tournament. But Warhill’s visiting Lions also faced the same situation.

And in the end, it was the Lions who prevailed in the Oct. 22 regular season finale, securing the last seeded tourney spot with a 4-0 shutout. The Lady Trojan season ended with a 0-8 district mark and 3-13 overall record.

“I don’t think we brought any of our skills with us,” said Lady Trojan coach Julie Ellis. “We’re much more capable than what we showed tonight.”

Warhill kept pressure on the New Kent defense in the early going before breaking through on Chelsea Wolfe’s shot with just under 14 minutes left in the first half. Four minutes later, Shannon McCabe made it a 2-0 contest, punching in the rebound off a save by New Kent keeper Maryon Wood.

The second Lion goal sparked a New Kent offense that had been stagnant and had not registered a shot for over 21 minutes. A strong offensive surge over the next seven minutes rocked the Lion defense, but failed to produce points. Then with less than two minutes to go before the break, the Lions cleared the ball out of their end and upped the count to 3-0 on McCabe’s second goal.

New Kent managed just eight shots for the night. Warhill unleashed 15. Wood was credited with nine saves while Lion keeper Chelsea Zweifelhofer managed eight.
